Rose M. Urban, MSW, JD, The CDM Group, Inc, 5530 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 1600, Suite 1600, Chevy Chase, MD 20815-4305, (301) 654-6740, Ext. 164, rurban@cdmgroup.com

The APIS Project Director will demonstrate the main features of the APIS web site and illustrate how to conduct specific policy searches. The presentation will begin with an overview of the web site, with descriptions and visual displays of its components, followed by a demonstration of how to use the APIS to identify recently established federal and state laws and regulations (across all 50 states and the District of Columbia) pertaining to specific policy topics of interest. Sample search strategies, including the use of keywords from the hierarchical Alcohol Policy Classification System, will be demonstrated. The presentation will focus on the in-depth and historical information on selected policy topics that forms the centerpiece of APIS’s services for researchers: carefully constructed variables that characterize policy status while providing cross-sectional and longitudinal comparability, and thorough documentation of underlying historical policy changes that allows researchers to construct alternative policy measures. The presentation will emphasize the range of policy topics available, the underlying construction of the policy variables, and the output and display options.
