Providing baccalaureate nursing students with clinical public health nursing experiences of adequate breadth requires creativity and innovation during times of chronic under-staffing in agencies. The challenge of finding suitable public health agencies for clinical placement is intensified when the student is an adult learner in an accelerated degree completion program (ADP). ADP students at Azusa Pacific University generally work full-time and commute from six surrounding counties. This situation demanded a re-thinking of the clinical experience, re-design of the curriculum, and the development of innovative linkages and partnerships with state and local public health agencies. The three core functions of public health (US Institute of Medicine, 1988) and the ten essential public health services (US Department of Health and Human Services, 1995) were incorporated into the revised clinical curriculum with attention to the Quad Council’s proposed “Competencies for Public Health Nursing”. ADP students completing their public health nursing clinical experiences under the new approach are able to complete objectives related to assessing a community, a family, vulnerable populations, and other aggregates.
