Lessons learned from the Precautionary Principle for occupational health

Katie Silberman, Public Policy, Center for Environmental Health, 528 61st Street, Ste. A, Oakland, CA 94609, 510 594-9864, ksilberman@cehca.org

The Precautionary Principle emerged in the 1990s, in response to the failure of environmental regulations to adequately protect human health and the environment. A precautionary approach is necessary when an activity raise threats of harm to human health or the environment even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically. This session will discuss the history of the Precautionary Principle and the process of implementing a policy of precaution in the city of San Francisco to protect workers and the environment.
