In this panel, young educators from several organizations will share their experiences in developing health and safety messages and educational approaches targeting young workers. Panel presentations will be followed by a facilitated discussion on the challenges and benefits of youth and adults working together to address health and safety problems, to share both youth and adult perspectives.
Youth-led Research: Staff and youth partners from Youth in Focus will present their youth-led research, evaluation and planning model. They will offer several case studies from their work with lessons learned for effective youth involvement in all aspects of projects, with the goals of youth empowerment, organizational improvement, and community development.
Americorps Workers Do Pesticide Education: Young health educators on staff at Proteus, Inc., a job training and employment development program in California's Central Valley, will demonstrate training tools and techniques they developed to teach farmworkers about the hazards of pesticides and how to protect themselves.
Peer Educators in Los Angeles: Peer educators from UCLA's Labor Occupational Safety and Health Program will share their unique perspective on the health and safety topics that are of most concern to youth when they conduct peer education classes in high schools and at youth conferences. They will also report on how they have used what they've learned in their own communities.
