China has experienced an alarming increase of HIV infection in the past decade, with 30% increase rate annually. experts believe that the total number of people living with HIV could have exceeded 1 million by late 2001. One of the most serious HIV challenges that China faces is mounting effective HIV prevention interventions for its 100 million rural-to-urban migrants. By now, there was essentially no systematic study on risky sexual perceptions and behaviors of this population. This report is an analysis of the first-phase formative research in a 5-year project "HIV/STD Prevention among Young Migrant in China" funded by NIMH. Based on the data collected in 2 major cities in China, including focus groups, 86 in-depth interviews and 4000 cases of survey, the paper documents the migrants°¯ sexual perceptions and behaviors, their knowledge and stigmatization of HIV, and analyses the social and cultural factors involved. The paper concludes that this migratory population is very vulnerable to HIV infection and harbors potential danger of fast spread of HIV to the general population in China. It calls for more culturally appropriate HIV prevention programs for the rural-to-urban migrants.
