Abstract #72627

Public health benefits of supplying fully produced copyright-free ATOD content to print and broadcast media

William R. Beard, BA, Media Relations, SAMHSA's National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information, P.O. Box 2345, 11426 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852, 1-800-729-6686, ext. 260, bbeard@shs.net

Most people would agree that we live in a media-rich society. But do we really? A quick review of broadcast and print media will show there are surprisingly few new ideas—i.e., content—despite the expanded programmatic capacity availed to us through cable television or the proliferation of specialty publications made possible through low-cost digital printing technology. This is especially true of media content related to public health despite ample evidence that audiences desire such information when provided in an audience-appropriate manner. This poster session will demonstrate that technological innovation and communications deregulation have conspired to provide the public health community with a unique opportunity to offer fully produced copyright-free content to commercial and public media outlets. In doing so, it will examine fully-produced content provided to media by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) with special emphasis on activities of SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, and SAMHSA’s National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information. The poster will detail the costs and benefits of this approach to media outreach and assess its value to ATOD efforts and public health. As a result of this poster, the participant will be able to: 1) Analyze the costs and benefits of producing content for use by media. 2) Identify local resources to facilitate the development of media content 3) Develop a media content production and dissemination strategy.
