In response to the healthcare needs of underserved, culturally diverse women who have limited access to healthcare in an urban area in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, funding was donated to develop a one day health promotion event. Today‘s Woman was created by culturally diverse individuals from various community settings and women from the population being served to provide an integrative approach to healthy living. The event begins with a motivational speaker to direct and support change in lifestyle behaviors and concludes with a presentation aimed at solidifying new skills sets and positive change factors. Seminars on healthcare issues are offered throughout the day addressing the healthcare concerns of those in attendance obtained via a needs assessment and survey. Between educational presentations, attendees are given multiple opportunities to attend health booths for individual primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention programs such as osteoporosis/dexascan testing, BP and stroke screenings, and instruction and model practice demonstrations for breast self exams. Follow up care is provided to the women via community resource offerings. A nutritional breakfast and lunch is provided in addition to a cooking demonstration on healthy eating tips involving audience participation. The success of this program has continued into its third year with funding extending for another 2 years. This year the program will include evaluation methods to measure the “intent of change” and follow up success and/or barriers to that change.
