The first group was established in the 19060’s as part of the war on poverty and was called health advisors. Some positions still remain in the Indian health service. We also find that the essential activities of the promotoras are common to many ethnic groups.
The panel members will discuss the myriad of issues promotoras face in completing their work; a diverse and growing population, lack of funds and professional support, sufficient resources and attrition of promotoras. They will identify key elements to overcoming these issues and how they have been able to survive societal, personal and professional issues to develop highly successful and productive community programs implemented by highly trained and promotoras. They will also discuss the inclusion of male promotores in a traditionally female activity and the impact it has had on their work and the community.
They will share their experience and the importance of local networking and the impact of regional and networking on the work their local efforts.
