SESSION ABSTRACT - "Think Globally - Work Locally": Research needed to advance tobacco control around the world

The landscape of tobacco control has changed quickly over the past decade. Litigation and declining smoking in many countries have motivated the multinational tobacco companies to aggressively move into new markets, including many developing countries, South East Asia, and the former Soviet-bloc countries of Central and Eastern Europe. With their financial resources and skills in capturing new smokers and new markets, the multinational tobacco corporations threaten the public health of the world, in both developed and developing countries alike. As the new threat of aggressive multinational tobacco companies is added to existing national and local companies, the developing countries are generally ill prepared to confront the predictable rise in smoking and morbidity and mortality caused by smoking. Many lack key elements of needed tobacco control infrastructure: governmental and non-governmental foci for tobacco control, tobacco control researchers, and for tobacco control research. There is a crucial need to strengthen the link between research and policy development to help address these gaps. This session will address the research to policy interface and will highlight current models to link the research, practice and advocacy communities. The session will include the research and advocacy perspective as well as provide examples of research data that could promote local and global tobacco control agendas
