Global initiatives in tobacco research: Current strategies and future directions

Harry A. Lando, PhD, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, Division of Epidemiology, 1300 South Second Street, Suite 300, Minneapolis, MN 55454, 612-624-1877, lando@epi.umn.edu

If present trends continue, an estimated 10 million people will die each year worldwide from tobacco related diseases. Most of these deaths will occur in developing countries. This is not an acceptable scenario. It is incumbent upon researchers as well as advocates to do everything they can to mitigate this incredible death toll. A conference was held on February 19, 2003 in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) to explore opportunities for expanding global research capacity, collaboration, and training. An interactive workshop immediately followed the conference. Recommendations from the workshop included developing a blueprint for action and for linking researchers with practitioners, advocates, NGOs, and relevant government agencies in a common search for strategies to reduce the global tobacco burden. A follow-up workshop was held at the August 2003 World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Helsinki. The current presentation will highlight key points from the February 19 conference, present recommendations from the workshops at SRNT and in Helsinki, and summarize progress to date in facilitating linkages between researchers and others concerned with global tobacco control.
