The 131st Annual Meeting (November 15-19, 2003) of APHA |
David Ross and Kristin Saarlas, MPH. Task Force for Child Survival and Development, All Kids Count, 750 Commerce Drive, Suite 400, Decatur, GA 30030, 404-371-0466, dross@taskforce.org
Preventive health services for children, effective and timely service delivery for children, especially those with special healthcare needs, and support for family and care providers will be improved through the emerging national health information infrastructure. Three national initiatives -- the National Health Information Infrastructure Intiative (NHII), the Public Health Information Network (PHIN), and the Medicaid Information Technology Architecture (MITA) -- will influence the manner in which future child health information systems function. This session will overview aspects of these initiatives and will examine the way in which they will influence future child health information, their supporting information system infrastructure, and explain how these innovations may improve care delivery and preventive health services. Immunization registries, electronic birth and death registration, newborn screening programs and other early child health screening programs will be examined in regard to their need to adopt vocabulary, messaging, security, and coding standards emerging from these national initiatives.
