Innovations from Turning Point's National Excellence Collaboratives

Turning Point, an initiative funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, sponsors five National Excellence Collaboratives whose members come from state and national organizations and government agencies. The Collaboratives are each developing new models for public health practice in key areas of public health infrastructure. Statute Modernization provides the structure for public health work; Information Technology and Social Marketing provide the tools for effective communication; Leadership Development provides direction for the work, and Performance Management provides a way to measure and improve what has been done. This session will explore the history of these five Collaboratives and the products and policies developed for public health practice.

National Excellence Collaborative products include: 1. Public Health Statute Modernization - a model state public health enabling statute; 2. Performance Management - a guiding policy document and curriculum From Silos to Systems: Using Performance Management to Improve the Health of the Public 3. Leadership Development - a curriculum on collaborative leadership along with training videos 4. Information Technology – a web-based inventory of software used by local and state public health agencies. 5. Social Marketing – in collaboration with CDC, a CD/ROM training tool and guide for improving health behavior CDCynergy SOC.

At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe the history and purpose for the Turning Point Initiative and Turning Point’s National Excellence Collaboratives. 2. Understand the collaborative approach to strengthening public health infrastructure through new practice models. 3. List public health practice tools and products available from the Collaboratives for all public health practitioners.
