NASA Ames Research Center has been exploring the use of remotely sensed data for human health applications since 1985, with the formation of its Global Monitoring and Human Health Program. This program, supported by the Life Sciences Division at Headquarters, was involved in modeling malaria transmission risk in California and in Mexico, and developed a core network of colleagues in the fields of epidemiology, vector ecology, and public health. In 1995, the Life Sciences Division initiated CHAART, the Center for Health Applications of Aerospace Related Technologies, at Ames. The focus of CHAART is to act as a “bridge” between NASA science/technology and the human health community; this is accomplished through focused research, training, and outreach that give scientists exposure to the tools that NASA has been successfully using in its scientific research and human health activities; these tools include spatial technologies such as remote sensing and geographic information science (GIS). Because of these capabilities, CHAART is actively supporting the NASA Public Health Applications Program by providing training to representatives from other federal, state, and local health agencies so that productive collaborations can be identified and realized. These new partnerships will provide opportunities for interdisciplinary research and applications, co-investment through leveraged funding, and the formulation of operational decision support systems.
