An Evening With..Dorothy P. Rice - Health Care Crises: Past, Present, and Future
Learning Objectives:
The 2003 Medical Care Section “Evening with…” honors Dorothy P. Rice, B.A., Sc.D. (Hon) for her contributions to public health. Dr. Rice is Professor Emeritus, Institute for Health & Aging, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, University of California, San Francisco. She was Director of the National Center for Health Statistics from January 1976 to June 1982, where she led in the development and management of an indispensable nationwide health care information system, which is accepted and utilized by the entire health field, both public and private sectors. She is a medical economist and has achieved national and international renown based on her extensive research, scholarly publications, and her leadership role, first in the Social Security Administration as Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Research and Statistics and then at the National Center for Health Statistics as Director. Professor Rice is the author of 250 published monographs, books, articles, and book chapters on the economics of medical care, aging, social security, Medicare, chronic illness, disability, health statistics, and various cost-of-illness studies, including the costs of the health effects of smoking, substance abuse, Alzheimer’s disease, mental illness, and others.
