WIC and child nutrition reauthorization: What's new and what it means

Jay D Hirschman, MPH, CNS, Office of Analysis, Nutrition and Evaluation, USDA Food and Nutrition Service, 3101 Park Center Drive, Alexandria, VA 22302, 703-305-2117, Jay.Hirschman@fns.usda.gov

WIC and the Child Nutrition Programs, including the National School Lunch Program, are due for reauthorization in 2003. Reauthorization, which generally takes place only once every five years, includes consideration of major changes to programs, some of which become part of the final law. These legislative changes can have major impacts on program services, costs and administrative requirements. This presentation will explain the changes that have become part of the final 2003 reauthorization law (or the latest version of the bill), and provide a framework for the policy discussion that resulted in these changes.
