The reauthorization of the child nutrition programs provides an opportunity to review the purposes of the programs and what can be done legislatively and otherwise to improve their reach and their quality. This year’s reauthorization has come at a time of increasing concern about children’s health as it relates to nutrition. Also, the economy raises continuing concerns about food insecurity among the families of low-income children, and changing demographics in the U.S. mean that more children must be cared for and fed by others many more hours of the day. More stakeholders than ever have been drawn to the reauthorization legislation, at a time when resources for expansion and improvement seem to be less available than ever. This presentation will cover the politics and outcomes of this exciting and important reauthorization, and suggest what needs to be done in its aftermath.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Understand the politics of legislative reauthorization.
• Discuss the outcomes of WIC and Child Nutrition reauthorization and future actions.
