California: Legislative Route to Universal Health Coverage

A single payer reform bill is now before the California Legislature, Senate Bill 921 (SB 921), introduced by state Senator Sheila Kuehl. The presentation will discuss the ability of a large-state Legislature to pass single payer reform, the need to identify and preserve single payer essentials in the legislation, the ongoing challenge of transforming the single payer concept into a political and practical reality and the essential role of a supportive grassroots movement. The speaker will provide an update on the progress of Senator Kuehl’s bill and discuss the relationship of today’s public health system to an integrated single payer system of the future.
