Abstract #74116

Mobilizing to Clean Up Silicon Valley’s Toxic Waste

Nobuko Mizoguchi, MPH/MPP, Silicon Valley Toxic Coaltion, 760 N. First Street, San Jose, CA 95112, 408-287-6707, nobuko@svtc.org

This presentation features the Computer Take Back Campaign. The Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, a grassroots organization, had identified waste in Silicon Valley from the computer industry including lead, polyvinyl chloride and other hazardous materials used in computer manufacturing. They have publicized these practices and now issue an annual report card that pressure the industry by assigning grades to the practices of local businesses. It, recently, gave poor or failing grades to Hewlett-Packard Co., Micron Technology Inc. and Gateway Inc.
