Abstract #74133

SB2 - Pay or play healthcare legislation

Don Moulds, Senator John Burton, California State Senate, State Capitol, Room 205, Sacramento, CA 95814, 916-445-1412, don.moulds@sen.ca.gov

Existing California law does not provide a system of healthcare coverage for all California residents and, other than workers' compensation, does not require employers to provide health care coverage for employees or dependents. This bill will would require employers to provide health care coverage for employees and dependents that is equivalent to coverage required by health service plans, but that includes coverage for basic prescription drugs. Employers must either provide coverage or pay a fee to cover employees through the State Health Purchasing Program. This presentation will describe the history behind this legislation, its key elements, and differentiate it from SB 921.
