The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) is a very large survey designed to meet state and local needs for health data in policy development and analysis, policy advocacy, service planning, and research. CHIS, conducted every two years beginning in 2001, is a collaborative project of the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, California Department of Health Services, and the Public Health Institute. It is the result of 3-year planning process that included extensive outreach to potential users of survey data to assess needs and obtain advice as well as examination of technical and resource issues and develop technical plan. CHIS involves over 150 people from many organizations in formal advisory committees to help plan content and methods for each survey. CHIS’s collaborative approach and public service mission includes a major commitment to extensive dissemination of data and results to maximize use by a wide range of constituencies.
