Abstract #74425

Information dissemination educational/academic liaison (IDEAL): Baylor EXCEED program

Frank Martin, MD, Section of Health Services Research, Houston Center Center for Quality of Care and Utilization Studies, Baylor College of Medicine, VAMC (152) 2002 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030, 713-794-8619, fmartin@bcm.tmc.edu

Baylor College of Medicine's EXCEED program includes seven research projects and an Information Dissemination and Educational Academic Liaison (IDEAL) Core, a support core that serves as the liaison between the health services research program and the community. IDEAL Core established a Community Education and Outreach (CEO) Network, a group of community advisors, to offer input on the research agenda. Through the IDEAL Core, Baylor faculty conduct "How to Talk to Your Doctor" community education forums. The two-hour forums on doctor-patient communication are intended for small groups that can benefit from better communication, such as elderly, low- English proficiency groups, and groups that express difficulty with medical staff. The forums are held at community-based sites (e.g., neighborhood centers, non-profit agencies and churches) in Houston, TX, where participants are encouraged to share their viewpoints and experiences. Forums enable participants to: 1) Recognize barriers to good doctor-patient communication; 2) Describe reasons for good communication; 3) Recognize examples of good communication; 4) Apply tips for improving communication; 5) Demonstrate good communication techniques; and 6) Recall good communication strategies.
