This speaker will provide an up to date overview on the availability of antiretroviral (ARV) AIDS treatments in the Global South. Positive developments in a few countries, which can serve as models for others, will be presented. Impediments and roadblocks such as pricing, patent laws and lack of political will to treatment access will be explored, as will the campaigns, demonstration projects and organizations working throughout the world to gain further ARV access. Comparative responses by the United States, European Union, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, the World Trade Organization, World Health Organization, various multinational corporations, and other institutions will be examined.
Presenter: John Iversen, Health GAP national board member and co-founder of the Berkeley Needle Exchange and ACT UP East Bay, has been HIV positive for 23 years.
His community health work has been recognized with numerous awards from the California Nurses Association. Bay Area United Way Olympic Torch Carrier, Alameda County, City of Berkeley, Bay Guardian, East Bay Express, among others.
