Abstract #74454

A Learning Process for a New Global Paradigm for Public Health and the Health Professions

Timothy G. Evans, MD, PhD, Health Equity, The Rockefeller Foundation, 420 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10018, 212-853-8320, tevans@rockfound.org

It is widely recognized that human resources for health are central to health system performance. However, the development of and support for both clinical and non-clinical health service providers and policy makers historically has been neglected. A diverse group of key stakeholders from all regions of the world are engaged in a two-year learning initiative to fundamentally rethink the immediate and long-term challenges of human resources for health in an effort to diagnose the current situation as well as develop short and long-term strategies for investment. A few examples of the dimensions that will be examined include the supply and demand for human resources, modeling human resource needs for major global disease challenges, the crisis of human resources in Africa and innovative models and frameworks to address health human resource problems more effectively. Greater focus for policy action and resource investment in human resources for health is critical to the performance of health systems. If the issue continues to be overlooked, more equitable health outcomes, such as access to life saving vaccines and the macro-level improvements reflected in the Millennium Development Goals, are unlikely to be met. At the end of the session, participants can expect to have greater understanding of the challenges being faced by this initiative, the process being followed, and the progress and future course of its work.
