In the mid 1990s the Institute of Medicine published reports documenting the importance of nurses and physicians being involved in addressing the health implications of environmental risks. The compelling need for health professionals to gain competencies in environmental health is described. Emphasis is on the skills and strategies for the key competency of risk communication.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to 1)discuss the importance of environmental risks to health,
• cite recommended environmental competencies for health professionals,
• recall at least two strategies for effective risk communication.
