Why is indoor air quality (IAQ) important? What are the short and long term health effects of the air we breathe inside buildings? This session will begin to answer these questions and will describe four basic integrated design principles needed to ensure the long-term health of building occupants. A brief history of IAQ research will lead to a description of the current methods of IAQ design with special emphasis on reducing sources of indoor air contaminants. Current techniques for material selection and specification with special emphasis on IAQ and other important sustainability criteria, will be presented along with a short case study to illustrate the results.
