New and emerging communicable diseases

Julie Louise Gerberding, MD, MPH, Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1600 Clifton Rd., Atlanta, GA 30333, 404-639-3311, donna.wright@apha.org

The numbers of new and emerging communicable diseases that have affected large groups of people have steadily risen in the past 20 years, and it is predicted that the number of such diseases will increase markedly in the remainder of the 21st century. The organized public health system’s present responses to these diseases will be illustrated, and lessons learned for the future from these responses will be presented.
