The range of disabilities arising from chronic diseases and other causes will be outlined and the current methods for helping individuals afflicted with these disabilities for overcoming helplessness and dependence will be described. Future approaches in helping people overcome disabilities will be presented based on current research efforts.

• Understand the new approaches being evolved to assist disabled individuals in developing independent lifestyles.
