Julia Greenberg, Deputy Director of International Programs, American Jewish World Service, 45 West 36th St., 10th Floor, New York, NY 10018, 212-273-1640, savrett@earthlin.com

People at the local level often innovate in addressing HIV/AIDS. These innovations are not usually shared among grassroots organizations or with international organizations, governments or the international community.

This session covers a project to support international exchanges in 2003 among five community-based African HIV/AIDS projects. Conducted with the support of the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), during 2003, the projects came together, shared their experience and expertise, and received follow-up support for HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support.

The five groups are: · GROOTS Kenya - a project working to enhance the capacity of rural women’s groups to ensure effective home-based care and HIV prevention education. · ProLink - a group in rural Ghana providing training to a cadre of peer educators among students, street youth, local entrepreneurs, and traditional healers, seeking to increase local visibility of PLWHA, increase youth demand for condoms, and support formation and on-going activity of school-based anti-AIDS clubs. · THETA - a Ugandan agency providing training and material support for rural traditional healer associations to conduct HIV/AIDS prevention education and home-based care. · KCCC - a Ugandan organization working in three parishes of Kampala to support HIV-infected and HIV affected children and youth, through clinic-based care, home-based care, psychosocial support, educational trainings and materials, and a micro-credit program. · IPA - a Zimbabwean organization providing training workshops for youth peer educators in three informal settlements outside Harare to generate appropriate HIV/AIDS education materials, organize anti-AIDS clubs, and organize HIV/AIDS awareness events.
