Mainstreaming Prevention: Addressing Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purposem of this Institute is to: 1. Setting the foundation for health care delivery systems in the US, a historical perspective. 1b. Scientific frameworks for health care delivery including, public health, medicine, and behavioral health. 1c. The role of prevention in public health, medicine, and behavioral health care delivery systems. 1d. How the health care delivery systems are impacted by insurance programs. 2a. Listing and discussing substances that are commonly used by students. 2b. Slide presentation of drugs that are commonly used by students 2c. Discussion of typical symptom ology associated with each of the substances identified 2d. Discussion of screening and assessment 3a. Overview of science-based prevention models that are currently in use throughout the country. 3b. Description of component operations and adaptations to various health care delivery systems 3c. Overview and discussion of the economics of prevention. 3d. How to cost out preventative interventions as a product of benefit analysis. 4a. A discussion on the impact of lifestyle and behavior on the cost of health care. 4b. Overview of societal views on wellness and illness at the individual, community and societal level. 4c. Discussion of how health education and early intervention can improve health outcomes.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this Session the participants should be able to: 1. To improve understanding of health care delivery systems and the role of prevention in each program model. 2. To increase understanding and recognition of substances and use or abuse among students. 3. To share science-based strategies for delivery of preventive interventions within various health delivery systems, which will allow the participants to integrate these activities in their programs. 4. To ensure that the participants understand why prevention is necessary in today’s health care delivery system.
