Evidence-Based Decision Making in Public Health (EBDM/PH): A How-To on Training
Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this Institute is to introduce state health agency policy makers and program managers, public health practice faculty, and continuing education directors to the value, concepts and methods that form the basis of Evidence-Based Decision Making in Public Health ( EBDM/PH). It also provides participants with a framework and access to resources on which a partnership among state agencies, academia, and professional associations can organize and deliver a successful EBDM/PH training program. Public health policy makers and program managers function in an increasingly competitive environment for new and continued program support and for new or increased funding. Even though policies and programs are implemented in the context of organizational culture and politics, they must begin with decisions based on sound scientific evidence. Public health professionals need the skills necessary to identify and use comprehensive, evidence-based recommendations on which programs and policies can be generated. By knowing that being able to apply an evidence-based public health (EBPH) framework is central to developing scientifically-based programs and policies and by having the tools to apply the framework, participants can advocate for training that assures their constituents are skilled in practicing EBPH. This train-the-trainer CEI will provide participants with the information, skills, and resources for implementing an EBPH training program in their states and/or for their constituents. At the conclusion of this CEI, participants will know the basic concepts of EBDM/PH and the steps that make up a framework for practicing it. More importantly, they will be provided with a model training structure, resource materials and web site access to a comprehensive course so that they can organize and implement a training program for their colleagues.
