Using Web-based Technology to Develop Tobacco Control Education in the Public Health Curriculum
Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of the Institute is to enhance participants’ skills for using web-based educational technology and infusing tobacco control learning modules into a public health curriculum. Web based technology can be a valuable tool in helping educators to meet learning objectives. However important decisions need to be made early in the development process regarding a number of issues including the scope of the material being taught, interactivity between faculty and students, learning evaluation, and methods for incorporating this mode of education into existing curricula structure. Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and a rapidly increasing epidemic in the developing world. It is vital that Public Health professionals be specifically trained in the application of Public Health skills to the tobacco epidemic. The presenters, with funding from the American Legacy/Association of Schools of Public Health Step Up Curriculum Development grants, have been developing web-based tobacco control modules on either side of the country (at Loma Linda University School of Public Health and at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) School of Public Health). This Institute will provide an opportunity to learn from their experiences and to develop successful strategies for infusing content specific material into Public Health skill based curriculum using technologies.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the Institute participants will be able to 1. Articulate the pros and cons of using web-based technology for education 2. Identify different approaches to using web-based technology in tobacco control education. 3. Discuss methods to involve faculty with integrating tobacco specific learning into the Public Health curriculum. 4. Prioritize objectives and activities for infusing tobacco control learning modules into Public Health Curriculum using web-based learning technology.
