The National Birth Defects Prevention Study
The purpose of the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) is to evaluate genetic and environmental factors associated with the occurrence of birth defects. The NBDPS, which began in October 1997, is an ongoing case-control study that records case-infants identified by existing birth defects surveillance registries in eight states. Case- and control-infants are identified from a base population of approximately 500,000 births. Control-infants are randomly selected from vital records or birth hospitals. Mothers are interviewed using a computer-assisted telephone interview. Parents are asked to collect buccal cells from themselves and their infants to be used for DNA analysis. Information gathered from the interviews, combined with information from DNA analyses, are used to study genetic and environmental factors and gene-environment interactions for a broad range of carefully classified birth defects. As of January 2003, interviews have been completed with 12,500 of the eligible case and control mothers, and nearly 5,000 infant DNA samples have been collected to date. Epidemiologic analysis has begun, and the planned research agenda includes over 100 proposals. This large case-control study is a unique collaborative effort that can serve as a model for studies of other rare health conditions. The unprecedented statistical power from this collaborative study will enable scientists to study the epidemiology of some rare birth defects for the first time. The NBDPS will have the unique ability to rapidly respond to new public health concerns such as concerns that certain drugs could be contributing to birth defects.
Learning Objectives: 1. Improve understanding of the public health impact of major birth defects in the U.S. 2. Inform participants of recent findings that implicate certain behaviors and lifestyle exposures in the etiology of birth defects, and discuss opportunities for prevention. 3. Increase awareness of the National Birth Defects Prevention Study to create opportunities for future collaborations.
