The National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP) is a collaborative effort of seven partner organizations – CDC / PHPPO, APHA, ASTHO, NALBOH, NACCHO, NNPHI, and PHF. The three NPHPSP performance assessment instruments (for state public health systems, local public health systems, and local governing entities) have been fully field tested and are available for use as of June 2002. Additionally, CDC/PHPPO has also worked with WHO and PAHO to develop international performance standards for use at the country level by ministries of health and their system partners. The international performance standards have been used in 42 countries to date. Session participants will learn about the four performance assessment instruments and their use at the international, state, and local levels. Representatives from areas that have used these instruments will share their experiences, successes, and lessons learned in initiating and implementing the performance assessment process. Speakers also will discuss quality improvement efforts that are implemented to address the performance assessment results. NPHPSP partners will share information about technical assistance and resources available to assist potential users. This session is the first of a two-part presentation. This session will explore the NPHPSP and International Performance Standards programs “in practice”, while the second session will allow participants to learn more about current and future research.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will: 1. Understand how the instruments have been used in practice 2. Gain knowledge about the resources available to assist them in conducting a performance assessment in their own public health system.
