Steps to a HealthierUS: Prevention Implementation Strategies for National and Community Levels; Small Changes Can Yield Dramatic Health Benefits
The “Steps to a HealthierUS” Initiative, launched in Spring 2003 by HHS Secretary Thompson, advances President Bush’s goal to help Americans lead healthier, longer, better lives. “Steps” focuses on the prevention of chronic diseases, namely diabetes, obesity and asthma, and making healthy lifestyle choices working through public-private partnerships at the state and community levels. This session will highlight: the vision and framework of “Steps” and a prevention portfolio of resources and useful tools for communities to leverage; the $15 million “Healthy Communities” grant program designed to improve the lives of Americans through innovative and effective community-based chronic disease prevention and control programs; and lastly, the national public-private partnership, America on the Move (AOTM), which encourages people to move more and eat less through a fun, simple “steps” program that allows individuals to begin to take charge of their weight by making small lifestyle changes.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session participants will: 1. Increase their awareness for the “Steps to a HealthierUS” Initiative and related strategies and resources available to communities. 2. Increase their knowledge of the availability and status of the Healthy Communities grant awards. 3. Learn tangible ways to mobilize their communities through effective, easy to implement programs using AOTM as the model.
