Public Health and the Pursuit of Peace
In 2002, the Governing Council declared its opposition to military actions in Afghanistan and in other nations as an undertaking that runs counter to the health and well-being of people. The Governing Council called on U.S. authorities to end military actions in Central Asia. The session on Public Health and the Pursuit of Peace will begin with a discussion of the public health perspective on the human consequences of war. Observers will give updates on the health consequences of military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. It will end with a presentation on peacebuilding and prevention. The last part of the session will be an “open mike” to give the audience an opportunity to share their impressions of how APHA can respond to the aftermath of war in Iraq and can advocate for peace.
Learning Objectives: At the completion of this sessions the audience will: 1. Describe the direct impact of war on the physical environment, and on civilian populations. 2. Identify the priority public health issues in Afghanistan and the activities that the US and other countries have initiated to meet public health needs. 3. Describe the impact of war on the health of the Iraq civilian population. 4. Identify roles that public health professionals can play in preventing war and in promoting a culture of peace.
