Environmental Toxics - Exploring the Association Between Environmental Toxics and Health
This session looks at health effects related to environmental exposures to toxic substances. Environmental exposures to particulate matter, environmental allergens, weather, and toxic chemicals will be assessed for their relation to health outcomes. Effects on health will be assessed for several outcomes and indicators, including birthweight, prevalence of respiratory illness and healthcare utilization. Issues of confounding and bias will also be addressed.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session participants will be able to: 1. Describe the effects of various environmental factors on the incidence of asthma. 2. Recognize the relationship between air pollutants, aeroallergens and asthma-related healthcare utilization. 3. Understand the potential effect of maternal smoking in addition to other maternal demographic variables in the relation between air pollution and birth outcomes
