An important part of Westat's success and growth stems from its broadly distributed form of employee ownership; employees realize that their efforts and commitment can make a difference in the value of their company.

For more than 40 years, Westat has conducted or supported health research for public and private sector clients. These projects use surveys, in person interviewing, record abstracting, physical examination, nutrition assessments and other methods for descriptive studies. Experimental studies include trials of therapeutic agents and diagnostic tests as well as clinical and community disease prevention studies. Westat's involvement ranges from short term support to long range planning and design for multi-year, multi-center projects. Studies are performed by interdisciplinary project teams representing a broad range of disciplines, including the following:

• Behavioral scientists
• Biostatisticians

• Computer systems professionals
• Data management specialists
• Epidemiologists
• Health services researchers
• Nutritionists
• Research nurses
• Survey research specialists

Study areas of interest to the public health community include epidemiological studies of chronic and infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, patient safety, health communication, cancer screening, and nutrition.
