Currently, more than twenty-five states have developed comprehensive cancer plans through a data-driven and stakeholder-driven process. Primarily through the coordinated efforts of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Cancer Society and C-Change members (formerly National Dialogue on Cancer), it is anticipated that all states will be implementing comprehensive cancer plans by 2005. Most, if not all of these plans address reducing barriers to cancer clinical trials by increasing awareness, knowledge and participation in trials; by increasing the number of trials for specific cancer sites; and by reducing or eliminating barriers to participation. Approximately 1.2 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States in 2004. Only 40,000 diagnosed adults will enroll in cancer trials and receive the benefit of treatment research.

The Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups' existing website and search engine can assist states in increasing awareness and participation in clinical trials. TrialCheck, available at www.CancerTrialsHelp.org, is a clinical trials search engine that lets the user quickly and easily identify trials that may be appropriate. TrialCheck contains hundreds of government sponsored clinical trials and is incorporating Investigational New Drug Industry trials. TrialCheck can be customized as a state portal providing clinical trials screening exclusive to the academic institutions, government and industry sponsored sites within a state.
