During meetings of the Chiropractic Health Care Section at the 131st Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association in November 2003, many faculty present expressed a perceived lack of awareness of the Healthy People 2010 initiative by the profession in general and by the faculty at chiropractic colleges in particular. Faculty’s awareness and attitudes are especially important because they influence students and the future of the profession. This study was undertaken to assess not only the awareness of the Healthy People 2010 initiative among the faculty at chiropractic colleges, but how important the faculty feel this initiative is to the chiropractic profession. In January 2004 the investigators developed a brief questionnaire, with input from the Center for Institutional Research and Analysis of Parker College. After approval by the Institutional Review Board, the questionnaire, with a cover letter, was e-mailed to the Chief Academic Officer of each U.S. chiropractic college, requesting that the survey be electronically distributed to all faculty. A faculty person at each college was identified to provide follow up. The survey is currently in process, with responses to be returned to the Center for Institutional Research and Analysis at Parker College either by e-mail or fax. Descriptive statistics characterizing the respondents and their opinions will be computed, and the analysis will be complete by March 2004. Once the results have been assessed, this information will be used to help design a faculty education program related to Healthy People 2010.
