The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the federal agency responsible for preservation of and access to the permanently valuable records of the federal government. The Electronic and Special Media Records Services Division has custody of the permanently valuable computerized records of federal agencies transferred to NARA for long-term preservation. The Division has approximately 200,000 computerized data files from over 100 federal agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. These data files were created as part of surveys, administrative databases, and other data collection efforts. A comprehensive listing of public health related data files in the custody of the Division will be provided. Members of the public can obtain copies of data files (and associated documentation) on a cost-recovery basis on removable media. The procedure for obtaining data files from the Division will be described. Beginning in fiscal year 2003, NARA is offering online search and retrieval access to a selection of the electronic database records in its custody through the Access to Archival Databases (AAD) resource.
