The Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness Research and Training (AANCART) is the National Cancer Institute's first-ever special populations network targeting on Asian Americans nationally to increase the cancer awareness, research, and training for Asian Americans. In 2000, we were fortunate to receive a five-year cooperative agreement based upon our submission of three specific aims and our proposal to focus on developing arenas in community-based, clinically-based, and research-oriented work in four major concentrations of Asian Americans: New York, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. During this presentation, we shall present our accomplishments vis-a-vis our three as well as the lessons learned and our unanticipated outcomes.
Specific Aims: Phase I (years 1-5): Build a robust and sustainable infrastructure to increase cancer awareness, research and training among Asian Americans
Phase II (years 2-3): Establish partnerships between AANCART and other entities to promote greater accrual of Asian Americans in clinical and preventive trials, to increase training opportunities for Asian Americans, to develop pilot programs in four target regions (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle)
Phase III (years 4-5): Formulate and successfully implement grant-funded research to reduce the burden of cancer among Asian Americans
