Social marketing of contraceptives by youth in northern Thailand
Author: Tassanee Srimongkol, Montri Pekanan, Sriphan Chansin and Nipaporn Intong
The Peer Outreach for Reproductive Health in Thailand (PORT) project is a convincing evidence of a social marketing approach that has influenced the development of program strategies that are relevant to the utilization of contraceptives and reproductive health (RH) services among youth population in the north of Thailand. In partnership, PPFA-International and Planned Parenthood Association of Thailand developed and tested an innovative model in bringing contraceptives and RH services to youth population for prevention of unwanted pregnancy and STI/HIV/AIDS. This project is a great example of youth empowerment for Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH) by increasing capacity of youth to provide contraceptives and RH education to their peers and manage contraceptive sales. The presentation will focus on youth capacity building, contraceptive sale management (social marketing), and accomplishments of the project from the last five year, 1999-2004 including expanding ARH networks in schools and community advocacy for ARH. The project will also demonstrate the benefits a program has on peer motivators as they gain valuable knowledge and skills that help them to become future ARH leaders.

Describe at least three successful strategies to increase contraceptive use for preventing unwanted pregnancies and STI/HIV/AIDS among adolescents/youth. 2.
