The American Chamber Foundation Philippines is implementing an adolescent reproductive health program among underprivileged youth currently enrolled in its development programs. This particular segment of adolescents is highly vulnerable to reproductive health problems such as teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. In partnership with the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA-I), the Foundation conducted a baseline survey to determine the knowledge, attitudes and practices on family planning and safe sex among these youth. The study also explored the nature of relationships and sexual behaviors. Included in the research were experiences with health providers and access to services and information. The survey was intended to serve as a basis to develop strategies to increase access to reproductive health services and address the needs of these youth. Major findings indicate that, though there is a general awareness about contraception, there is a lack of in depth understanding about safe sex and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)/ HIV/AIDS among the respondents. This is a major concern because the youth exhibited high level of openness and liberation toward sex which puts them at a greater risk.
