Cate Bohn, MPH, March to Save Women's Lives Volunteer, 127 Jordan Blvd., Delmar, NY 12054, 518-439-1017, catebohn@earthlink.net
The 2004 March for Women’s Lives will be a resounding success if only in attendance and excitement but also in highlighting the interconnected health issues of Women’s Lives. The March sponsors, Planed Parenthood Federation of America, Inc, Feminist Majority, National Organization of Women (NOW) and the NARAL Pro-Choice America each employed creative and traditional means of communication to mobilize thousands of individuals to travel to Washington, DC. Meet-up, an Internet portal for organizing local meetings was instrumental in getting information out to a great number of people. The sponsors’ web sites also employed many new colorful graphics and videos to convey the urgency of the issue and the historical significance of the impending threats to the freedom of choice in the USA. The name change at the start of 2004 signaled that in an election year the fundamental individual freedoms united in reproductive health and social justice. The April 25, 2004 March tenets of Choice, Justice, Access, Health Abortion, Global and Family Planning cover a wide range of health and social issues that impact women from all ages, walks of life, all races and religions. Participants will be encouraged to examine the yearlong organizing process leading up to the March and share their individual March activism stories. Photos of the March will be on view during this session. Participants are encouraged to bring their photos and March mementos.
