Among the most tragic of the nation's many health disparities are the mortality and morbidity related to substance abuse problems among Native Americans. They are disproportionally over-represented in the treatment rolls in publicly funded agencies across the country, but under represented in those that successfully complete the treatment process. While there are 562 federally recognized tribes across the nation with very different needs and traditions, we are all under one sky. Working with stakeholders from across the country, the One Sky Center provides blueprints for comprehensive services that honor the traditional ways of living and healing among Native Americans. The Center provides training, technical assistance and products to expand the capacity and quality of substance abuse prevention and treatment serving this population. Its network of Centers of Excellence include a behavioral health network in Alaska, an adolescent residential treatment facility in Oklahoma, a national Indian youth leadership program in New Mexico and national center for Wellbriety in Colorado. To date, One Sky has catalogued over 100 federally funded prevention and treatment projects in operation in American Indian and Alaska native communities for dissemination to practitioners across the country. Staff are developing culturally relevant criteria for the evaluation and identification of model programs to serve these special populations.
