South Asian health symposium: Alcohol and mental health issues among Asian Indian Americans: Perspectives from New Jersey

Antony Stephen, PhD, MSW, New Jersey Asian American Association for Human Services, P.O. Box 717, 1201 Morris Avenue, Union, NJ 07083, 908-289-1658, antonystephen@optonline.net

There is lack of research on alcohol and substance use and abuse among Asian Indian Americans in the U.S. although numerous studies have been published on other Asian American subgroups. This research project undertaken by the New Jersey Asian American Association for Human Services (NJAAAHS) with a grant from the Office of Minority and Multicultural Health, Department of Health and Senior Services, attempts to rectify this gap in research. This research project entitled “Prevalence of Alcohol Use Among Asian Americans in Jersey City” included 535 Asian Indian Americans in a sample of 1,500. This presentation will highlight the kind of alcohol beverages consumed, the place of drinking, people with whom drinking takes place, reason for drinking and reason for not drinking. Community-based prevention strategies will be discussed in detail. Additionally, a profile of mental health issues among Asian Indian Americans including major depression, anxiety disorder and social phobia will be developed with the help of clinical case studies from our records. Culturally effective treatment approaches such as family involvement in therapy and other interventions will be presented.
