Background: In 1991, the first Navajo Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS I) was the first Navajo Nation-wide, population based survey conducted among Navajo people. The second survey, NHNSII, was a follow up to the first and was a collaborative effort between Navajo Special Diabetes Project and Navajo Area Indian Health Service Health Promotion Program.

Objective: The Navajo Health and Nutrition Survey II objectives were to compare to the first NHNS survey, to determine diabetes prevalence, and to gain knowledge on values, behaviors and beliefs.

Methods: A three-level stratified random sample selection by household design was used. The eligibility criteria was non-institutionalized individuals aged 12 or older from the selected household. SUDAAN was used for weighed analysis.

Results: The NHNS was completed within a year with 715 participating household and 1137 interviews completed. The preliminary results show that 61% were aged 40 or older; there was a difference in age of those who spoke Navajo (p<0.0001); most, 70% of women were overweight or obese; the diabetes prevalence was 17.1%; and, being overweight was significantly associated with having diabetes (OR=1.7, CI 1.1-2.6).

Conclusion: The health and nutrition status the of Navajo people based on a comparison of the two surveys indicated that the potential risk factors including obesity and sedentary lifestyle for diseases as diabetes, hypertension, and coronary heart disease had increased.
