Sowing the Seeds, a Public Health Solutions project with support from Community-Campus Partnership for Health, is project aimed at initiating the conversation about the importance of a college education among immigrant parents and their pre- and elementary school aged children. Focus groups and group interviews were conducted to identify which topics would be most helpful to parents wanting to promote the value of a higher education among their children. The information collected from the parents and other sources, provided the foundation for the curriculum development. The curriculum was implemented with parent groups from two community agencies serving many of the new immigrants in the Washington Heights area of New York City, the Washington Heights Inwood Coalition serving a local elementary school and Columbia University Head Start Program. The curriculum was adapted to provided training for the educational and administrative staff of the Columbia Head Start Program. This presentation will: 1) describe the projects’ process and development; 2) the qualitative and other research findings; 3) the objectives and sample activities of the curriculum and 4) the participants’ assessment of the intervention.
