The Futures Initiative, CDC’s strategic planning process, identified priorities for accomplishing a vision for CDC’s role in global health. It was determined that CDC plays a unique and crucial role in contributing to the health and safety of the world's populations. The case was made that in order to protect US interests at home and abroad, provide essential humanitarian assistance and improve the stability of and ensure the purchasing power of other nations, an investment in global public health is a critical step for the nation. CDC's long history of providing the technical expertise needed for capacity building and sustainable development at the global level identifies the agency as a key player in ensuring research and programs are developed and delivered successfully while supporting the development of in-country sustainability for conducting and continuing future research and programs. The key major issues that were determined included, developing sustainable public health capacity in key countries, preventing and controlling high priority causes of death, disease, injury and disability, building skills, tool and networks needed to support national and international prevention and control efforts and enhancing CDC's ability to respond to global challenges and threats.
