With financial support from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, the Center for the Advancement of Distance Education (CADE) within the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center (OHRC) at Georgetown University have collaborated over the last 2 years on the development of two Web-based training (WBT) curricula promoting pediatric oral health management for health professionals. OHRC’s subject matter expertise has been used to identify and rework materials into content appropriate for self-paced WBT. CADE has prepared this content for internet delivery by drawing upon instructional design principles and eLearning usability techniques. The projects, geared toward a diverse audience of health professionals, have been driven by a blend of technological and pedagogical considerations. Accessed by thousands of learners, the online modules incorporate text, graphics, illustrations, multimedia, self-assessment and evaluation within an appealing, dynamic, user-friendly interface.

Our presentation will outline the strategies behind the OHRC/CADE team’s project development in a way that is of interest and immediate practical use to public health educators developing their own materials for dissemination via the internet. We will describe the educational values associated with creative, self-paced, self-contained WBT. We will outline ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation) used in the curriculum building and reporting process. We will also examine the strategies behind the two oral health management curricula and offer guidelines on how to most effectively produce and promote WBT to fulfill training objectives.
